There are four meetings a year, all held on a Saturday, thus enabling those members with longer journeys, or professional commitments during the week to attend.

The lodge meets in the relative opulence of the Old Ship Hotel, a venue which reflects its colourful beginnings.

The Earl of Sussex is a small but friendly lodge and its small number leads to an intimate and convivial atmosphere. However, the lodge warmly welcomes visitors, new members and initiates.

So, it is important when considering becoming a freemason, or indeed joining another lodge, to see if it offers an ambiance which suits.

This is a brief picture of the Earl of Sussex Lodge and what are considered to be its distinctive features.

Founded in 1887, the Earl of Sussex Lodge is one of the oldest in Sussex.

As its name suggests, the Earl of Sussex Lodge was founded by eminent masons of the day and in accordance with their status, they met and dined at the Royal Pavilion. The lodge moved to the Old ship hotel in 1926.

Prior to the end of the First World War, the formal attire was white tie and tails, this was relaxed in 1919 to the new style of Dinner Jacket. DJs are still the preferred dress today although dark suits are equally acceptable.

The lodge still uses many of its original furnishings, thus maintaining a visible link with its past.

Having its roots as a “Dining Lodge” the work may be less formal than in some lodges, but lacks nothing in integrity and sincerity.

As the meetings are held in a well respected hotel, dining is of a high standard. Members and guests are rarely disappointed.

The first lodge in Sussex to receive the Hall-Stone lodge jewel (centre above). The lodge continues to this day to be exemplary in its charitable givings.
